The wheelchair industry is presented with an opportunity for standardized development
The coverage of medical insurance and long-term care insurance has continued to expand, and the reimbursement ratio for wheelchairs in many places has reached 50%.
At the beginning of 2026, the domestic medical device classification policy was adjusted. Manual wheelchairs were downgraded from Class II medical devices to Class I. The registration and approval process was simplified, the cycle was shortened, and the compliance cost was reduced. This promoted the standardized development of the industry, attracted more enterprises to enter the market, and enriched the product supply. After the policy adjustment, the threshold for enterprises to develop new products has been lowered, and the time to market has been shortened. This enables them to respond more quickly to market demands and launch products suitable for different user groups. At the same time, the intensification of market competition has forced enterprises to improve product quality and service levels, promoting the overall upgrading of the industry.
The Disabled Persons' federations in many regions have simultaneously optimized the subsidy policies for assistive devices. Starting from 2026, the scope of free application for electric wheelchairs has been expanded from severe disabilities at levels one and two to those with physical disabilities at level three. The mandatory requirement for minimum living allowances has been abolished. Ordinary families in difficulty can apply with a certificate. Families on minimum living allowances, those in extreme poverty, and those with multiple disabilities in one household will be given priority in approval. Some regions have launched online application and door-to-door delivery services, simplifying the application process and lowering the threshold for users to obtain information. This has effectively alleviated the economic burden on families, enabling more people with mobility issues to enjoy policy benefits and improve their quality of life.
The coverage of medical insurance and long-term care insurance has continued to expand, and the reimbursement ratio for wheelchairs in many places has reached 50%. 80% of the demand for mid-to-high-end products has been activated, driving enterprises to increase investment in research and development and improve product quality and functional configuration. While policy dividends are being released, industry supervision is continuously strengthened. Relevant departments have intensified quality spot checks on wheelchairs, with a focus on assessing structural strength, braking performance, stability and electrical safety. They are urging enterprises to strictly adhere to production standards to ensure the safety of users when using the equipment. Policy support and regulatory oversight go hand in hand, providing a favorable environment for the healthy development of the wheelchair industry and facilitating the continuous expansion of the industrial scale. By 2025, the domestic market size had reached 30.2 billion yuan, and it is expected to exceed 50 billion yuan by 2031.
